Why I Coach My Clients To Carb Cycle…..

IMG_0907 IMG_0910

Ever hear of Carb Cycling?  It’s been around for years!  Athletes  have used it to get into tip-top shape for decades!  Even the show “Extreme Weight Loss” trainer, Chris Powell, uses Carb Cycling to help contestants drop weight fast, while feeling great!  AND I CARB CYCLE TOO!

Being healthy is my number one priority.

(CONTINUE READING HERE) When I carb cycle, I feel amazing and know I’m at my healthiest, eating REAL FOOD that closely resembles nature.   I love watching my clients drop weight, finally SEEING those muscles they work so hard for in the gym.

Above is one example of a low-carb meal, my lunch from the other day.  (Sautéed mushrooms, brussel sprouts and basil with tempeh.)  If I wanted it to be high-carb, I’d add 1/2 cup of lentils or brown rice.

With Carb Cycling, you have high carb and low carb days.  This cycling literally turns your body into a fat-burning machine!  Depending on your style of eating and how quickly you want to slim down, there are many different ways to Carb Cycle.   Based on my client’s eating styles, goals, food-cravings, etc – I advise accordingly on the best way to cycle.  Here’s the science and why I LOVE this method!

High Carb Days stimulate an insulin response that shuttle nutrients into your muscle cells, causing them to grow.  Think about high-energy work out days or when you weight train!  You want this for your muscles!  You won’t lose muscle like you would on a low cal ‘diet’.  High carb days also help to replenish glycogen stores that fuel your muscles and make you feel awesome and energized!

Low Carb Days promote fat loss by tricking your body into burning fat for fuel (instead of the sugar from the carbs, where it would normally get its energy/fuel).  Low carb days also keep your body more receptive to insulin, improving your body’s function for muscle-building.  Much better and faster results from your weight training!

Anyway, so that’s Carb cycling in a nutshell!  It’s very effective which is why I coach most of my clients in this methodology.   I’m happy to coach you too!  (Feel free to ask questions here too!!!)

  1. Hey Avril- What is your favorite tempeh? I have been looking at it in the grocery store, but have been shying away because of the high calorie and fat content I have been reading on the label. Also, isn’t made with grains, making it more of a carb heavy item?
    Love your blog!

The above link is what I use (I get it at Heinen’s and Whole Foods). It’s the lowest in fat, cals and carbs that I’ve seen anywhere and high in protein! It has only 3 net carbs (You take the 10 total carbs and minus the 7 grams of fiber, giving you only 3 carbs THAT COUNT-and that’s low!). It has 16 GRAMS OF PROEIN, 4.5 grams of fat and 140 cals in a 3 ounce serving. Personally, with carb cycling I try to put something in my mouth every 3 hrs to keep ‘the engine burning’ so I’ll have about 2 ounces at a time instead of 3. Granted 2-3 ounces alone isn’t going to fill you up, but the protein coupled with a ton of veggies (and maybe 1/2 cup of lentils on a high-carb day) is plenty filling.

For some reason, the website nutrition info does NOT reflect what is actually written on the back of the package’s nutritional info. The stats I mentioned in my previous reply are all stated on the actual package. Weird!
